Rainwater Harvesting 101
Rain that hits a roof is already collected. The work is to slow it, clean it enough for your use, store what you can, and give the overflow a useful path into the landscape instead of the street.

Start with the roof and the gutters
Measure roof catchment roughly: square footage times rainfall depth gives you volume. Even a modest shed can fill barrels fast in a spring storm. Clean gutters matter more than fancy tanks — debris-clogged downspouts defeat every clever valve downstream.
First flush and screening
The first minutes of rain wash dust, bird droppings, and leaf grit off the roof. A simple first-flush diverter or a screened inlet keeps that load out of your barrels. Fine mesh at the tank inlet stops mosquitoes; a tight lid does the rest.
You do not need laboratory water for irrigating guilds. You do need water that will not clog drip lines or breed pests in open containers.
Storage that fits your place
Barrels are honest starters: cheap, modular, and easy to shade. Larger cisterns make sense once you know your monthly use and your driest stretch. Elevate tanks a little if you want gravity feed; otherwise plan for a small pump or hand watering from a spigot near the bed.
Shade tanks when you can. Cooler water, less algae, longer barrel life.
Overflow is part of the design
Every system will overflow in a big storm. Pipe that surplus into a swale, a mulched basin, or a rain garden — never onto a neighbor’s foundation or a slick walkway. Slowing water on your land is often worth as much as storing it.
In freeze climates, plan for winter: drain fittings that crack, leave overflow clear of ice dams, and know which barrels you will empty before hard freezes.

Capture what you can, clean the first flush, and design overflow on purpose. That trio beats a pretty tank with nowhere for the excess to go.
